Epinions, an advertising-supported online forum for product reviews by consumers, laid off 24 of its 88 workers, or 27 percent. The across-the-board cuts come just weeks after the start-up completed a redesign and weeks before it will announce new financing that executives insist will sustain it to profitability.

Dot.com job cuts hit record level
In January, dot.com companies set a new layoff record, announcing 12,828 job cuts, a 23% hike over December's record total of 10,459, according to Chicago-based outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas Inc.

Having missed its growth projections the exchange could not find a buyer and has ceased operations. It follows the demise the day before of online restaurant reservation system Foodline.com, as the dotcom shakeout continues to claim its victims.
